Great makeup always starts with great skin. And when you’re sick, skin tends to look really dull, sallow, lifeless, and red, so it’s important to begin your day off with a great skin care routine. Dewy skin (no matter the day or how you’re feeling) is always the best way to look fresh, awake, and youthful.
One of my favourite moisturizers for tons of hydration is the Paula’s Choice Ceramide-Enriched Moisturizer. It keeps the skin hydrated, plump, and soft all day long; so especially when I’m sick, I don’t have to worry about any dry patches making their way onto my face.
Another important moisturizer to apply to your skin when you’re ill is a high quality, brightening eye cream. Not only will it de-puff the under eye area, it’ll also lift the appearance of any dark shadows you may have. My favourite product for this is the Saturday Skin Wide Awake Brightening Eye Cream. It’s actually been the only eye cream that I’ve tried so far that I’ve seen a visible difference with. There’s also something about the earthy scent of this that I just absolutely love as well.
And of course, a lip balm is an integral part of any skincare routine, but of course when you’re sick, the lips do tend to look even drier than they normally would. A very nourishing, thick, and moisturizing one like the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm is a must-have for me when I’m not feeling my greatest. The mint flavoured one will wake you right up!
Eye Makeup Tips:
To start looking convincingly healthy, begin by applying a light beige eyeliner to the waterline (e.g. Nyx Wonder Pencil). This will help open up the eyes and give the illusion that they’re a lot bigger than they actually are.
Then, make sure to give your eyelashes a good curl with a Kevyn Aucoin Eyelash Curler to give the appearance of wider, brighter eyes. (Don’t skip this step — it makes a huge difference!)
And since it’s almost a guarantee that your eyes will be watery throughout the day, follow up your curl with a couple coats of Mac Haute & Naughty Waterproof Lash Mascara to prevent getting any raccoon eyes. I love this mascara because it comes with 2 wands, so you can choose whether you’d like to have natural-looking, long lashes or big, voluminous ones.
Face Makeup Tips:
Of course if you’re lucky enough to not need foundation, forgo it completely, however, if you do need some coverage, opt for a thin layer of something like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation mixed in with a touch of Mac Strobe Cream. This will give your skin a beautiful, radiant glow whilst also evening out your complexion. If you have any spots that you still need to cover up after foundation, you can always go in with a bit of concealer in only those areas.
Speaking of concealer, if you’ve been around for a while, you know that I’ll always recommend the Nars Creamy Radiant Concealer because well, it’s the best! It’s hydrating but still offers opaque coverage and is very long-lasting. So, if you’re someone who still needs a bit of covering up after applying your foundation, definitely give this concealer a go — It’s fantastic.
You’ll then want to apply your favourite cream or liquid blush onto the apples of your cheeks. The Nars Liquid Blushes are a great option for this, as they’re really pigmented and long-lasting. The reason you want to opt for a wet formula over a powdered one is because powders tend to emphasize dryness in the skin, whereas cream formulas reflect light and make the skin look refreshed and hydrated.
When applying highlighter, make sure to opt for a cream-based one as well to really awaken the skin and capture the light. I love the Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Sticks as they’re really lightweight and give off a beautiful, sophisticated glow. They also come in a variety of different shades to complement different skin tones (I use shade Champagne Flash).
